Steroids and cowardly pox not a good mix
Steroids and cowardly pox not a good mixOctober 19, 2005 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Children who hit been treated with steroids and are exposed to cowardly pox tend to hit a more nonindulgent case of the virus, according to medicine oncologists at Brenner Children's Hospital, conception of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. New research published in the October issue of Pediatrics, says that children who are undergoing endocrine treatments for diseases like childhood cancer are at increased risk of contracting a more nonindulgent form of cowardly pox, which haw termination in death. "Steroids are used to treat cancer and they suppress the insusceptible system," said saint McLean, a medicine oncologist at Brenner Children's Hospital. "When a female is exposed to the pox virus (the virus that causes cowardly pox) around the instance they are receiving endocrine treatment, they are more likely to lessen a more nonindulgent case of cowardly pox." McLean and his colleagues studied 697 patients with accent cancer over a nine-year period. About 16 proportionality or 110 patients shrunken cowardly pox. Of those 110 patients, 54 had nonindulgent disease, including digit deaths. Of the patients whose cowardly pox was diagnosed within threesome weeks of taking steroids, 70 proportionality had nonindulgent incident whereas only 44 proportionality of those who had not conventional endocrine therapy within threesome weeks had nonindulgent infection. Although the think was limited to patients with leukemia, the findings haw administer to other conditions for which steroids are used, McLean said. "One of the things we need to advert to ask before we prescribe endocrine communication is whether the female has had a past exposure to cowardly pox," McLean said. "If so, we recommend waiting until the birth punctuation has passed before beginning endocrine therapy." Steroids are a ordinary and highly successful communication for some childhood cancers, McLean said. "We just need to make sure we don't mix the two," he added. "Steroids and the cowardly pox virus don't go together. They are a bad combination." Chicken pox is commonly mild, but it can be earnest and modify life threatening. In 1995, a pox immunogen was developed to help prevent the spread of the virus. Prior to the widespread use of the pox vaccine, approximately 12,000 people were hospitalized for cowardly pox apiece assemblage in the United States and 100 died as a termination of the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Since the introduction of the vaccine, the incidence of pox has decreased steadily. We wish one day to destroy the disease all together," McLean said. "I strongly encourage any parent whose female has not had cowardly pox to intend that female vaccinated." Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center
